About Ascend Therapy

The human spirit is oriented towards connection, growth, and peace. We move toward these pursuits from the earliest stages of development, as we are comforted by the mere presence of our caretakers as infants, as we rebel against that security to establish autonomy beginning in toddlerhood, and as we absorb the fulfillment which comes with moments of presence and belonging throughout the lifespan. As children, our ambitions are unfettered, as we see every possibility and opportunity as reachable. We are looking forward, looking upward with enthusiasm and energy hungry for our opportunity to achieve.
The experiences we encounter from the onset of this journey shape the degree to which this energy persists. We face setbacks and mishaps, discouraging and limiting messages, and in the harshest scenarios trauma and outright maltreatment. It's often the case that to protect ourselves from the pain associated with these experiences, we begin to temper the expectations we hold and ambitions for ourselves and our future. We begin to settle and compromise with life to fit into the image projected onto us by outside influences. We find ourselves letting go of our image of who we truly are, what we're capable of, and the life we first saw for ourselves.
My vision for establishing this practice is to support individuals in reconnecting with their earlier, untamed ambition towards life. I am of the philosophy that you possess everything you need to achieve your goals. The human spirit referenced above has incredible capacity, and it is still within you. I see my role as a partner and collaborator to help people access this drive, this wisdom, and to follow the direction it gives you. Through this, we can all climb to the heights of our potential and become the person we were meant to be.

Ascend Therapy Services is the private practice of Jason Swartwood. I am Clinically Licensed as a masters level Social Worker since 2013, and have worked in behavioral health since 2005 after obtaining my B.A. in Psychology at that time. In my career I have worked with individuals across the life span, with the primary focus of my work being adult and adolescents. I have served in the non-profit behavioral health field for the entirety of this career prior to beginning this practice. I gained experience in direct clinical practice and leadership roles in outpatient settings, including health centers, community behavioral health, and school settings.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is my primary area of specialty. My training has enabled me to help people work through issues including but not limited to anxiety, depression, addiction, relationship issues, and stage of life issues. I primarily work with adult and adolescent populations.
I implement a person centered collaborative approach through which we will partner and work together to identify and pursue a path forward. My approach to therapy is more present/future oriented, and draws from concepts associated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy, and Humanistic approaches.

Relationship Therapy

As social beings, much of how we see ourselves and experience our lives exists in the tapestry of our relationships. While relationship therapy is not a primary area of focus within the practice, strategies to support healing and strengthening of relationships will be incorporated as indicated and desired by clients served. My current approach to relationship therapy is for a primary client to invite a "visitor" to sessions to sort through and resolve relationship discord.
